Pre Season Friendly #2

Wgtn Utd Salmon 0- Marist Inter 5

(Halftime 0-2)

Salmon:
Sami
Simon Healey
Adam Holloway
Dave Armstrong
Richard Hallam
Danny Culling
Craig Ireson

Ring-ins and trialees:
Bart Wilson
John Hudson
Sean Anderson
Chris Scott
Cam
Enrico

Salmon had their last pre-season game against a very skilled Marist Inter (div 5) on a blistering hot autumnal day at Crawford Green. The first half was a tight affair and Danny and Craig both missed good chances up front. Craig managed to fire over the bar from within 6 yards after Danny and John had gotten in behind the Marist defence.

The light Jabulani ball (purchased with love by Danny) was hard to control on the rock hard ground and took a hammering from the traffic on Miramar Broadway.
The second half saw the Salmon lose concentration through tiredness and conced a few soft goals. Although the game ended up being a onesided affair there was plenty of positives- Sami again was dominant, but his distribution needs some work, and Salmon continued to craft chances throughout the match despite the very tired legs at the end.

Div 9 2010

The draw is out, the wait is over.
Salmon now know who they'll face in 2010:

CAPITAL 9:
Wgtn Utd Salmon
Tawa ACs
Upper Hutt Saints
Wgtn Utd Legends
Petone Stewsmums
Stop Out
Tawa Bears
Seatoun Gulls

It contains only two teams we have never played before; Wgtn Utd Legends (look fwd to the derby) and the UH Sinners.

Other than that it has all the hallmarks of a classic Div 9 lineup.

I am backing both Wgtn utd teams to make a mark this season, but if its the same Stop Out team from a few seasons ago they will be a tough nut to crack.

A one sided arm wrestle

WU Salmon 3- WU Arms 11
(Ht 2-6)
Crawford Green

Scorers (Salmon only)

Bart
Ash
Craig

Well, despite the scoreline blowout the signs were good in parts, with all 3 goals coming from crisp passing after sustained pressure. But the Salmon could only field 9 players and had to steal from the Arms to even make up 10. This, coupled with early season fatigue, meant the Salmon only challenged in the middle two quarters. (The game was four x 20 minutes.) at least three, maybe four, of the arms goals could be linked to tired defence- Sami in particular was sluggish towards the end of the game- having finished his taxi shift at 5am. To be fair to him he did pull of about 5 quality point blank saves in the first half, and his kicking has improved markedly over summer.

The Arms are a handy team and a defeat to them is no shame, although the scoreline might not have been so lopsided had we had another 2 players on hand. Nigel and Ben were our most promising I thought, showing real pace and passion to win the ball.

So the biggest lessons from this are fitness and commitment. Start running, start swimming, do whatever it takes to be able to run hard for the full 90. And maybe it is too early to start the preseason regime- with a squad of 20 players it was disspointing not to get a full turn out, however everyone had good reasons not to be there on Sunday.

Next Sunday we take on the Elite-C'mon Salmon -11 players please!

Early Contender for quote of the season

Salmon have just started their preseason training:
Tuesday evenings
7.00-8.30 pm
MacAllister Park, Wellington
All Welcome

A young guy turned up last night and when I asked him if he had played much he said he hadn't played since he was at school... "two years ago".

Given that the average age of the Salmon is mid to late 30's this boy is early contender for youngest ever Salmon and up for the quote of the year.

Is he the first Salmonista to be born in the decade in which Salmon began?

Pre Season Friendlies 2010

The campaign to retain the Division Nine Cup, and to finish in the Champions League placings, ahs begun.

Three Preseason Friendlies have been announced.

Wellington United Salmon vs. Wellington United Arms
Sunday 14 February
1pm KO
Crawford Green, Miramar

Wellington United Salmon vs. Wellington United Elite
Sunday 21 February
1pm KO
Crawford Green, Miramar

Wellington United Salmon vs. Sunday Blazers FC
Saturday 27 March
1pm KO
Crawford Green, Miramar

WU Arms finished 3rd in Div 5 last season. They are one of the most succesful WU social sides. Despite this the Salmon have always given them a run for their money, in fact last season we drew our preseason game with them 2-2. The only time we were in the same division together it finished honiurs even with 1 win apiece.

WU Elite finished 5th in Div 7. Salmon have never played them before.

The Sunday Blazers play in the stand alone Wgtn Sunday League. They are a very good team, with a quick fluid style. We have played four preseason friendlies against them- Won 1, drew 1, lost 2.

Who is returning to the spawning grounds for the 2010 season, and who is swimming on, further out to sea?

Stay tuned for updates.
